Risk reversal

Risk reversal is anything that moves the risk of trying a product from the buyer to the seller: a free trial, a free plan, a money-back guarantee, no credit card, or easy cancellation.

Why it matters

Even interested buyers hesitate when the next step feels risky: paying before they know it works, getting locked in, or wasting time on set-up. Lowering that risk often matters as much as making the product sound better.

How to get it right

  • Name the specific risk you remove, next to the call to action.
  • Keep the terms identical everywhere they appear on the page.
  • Say what happens at the end of a trial before the buyer asks.

Common mistakes

  • A "free trial" that asks for a card without saying so up front.
  • A trial length or guarantee that differs between the hero, pricing and FAQ.
  • Hiding cancellation terms, which reads as a reason to worry.
