Klar vs Hotjar for landing page feedback
Heatmaps and session recordings show where visitors scroll, click and leave. People look for something else when the page has too little traffic for the data to mean anything, when it isn't live yet, or when they can see visitors leaving but not why.
The short answer
Hotjar measures real behaviour, which beats any opinion, but it needs traffic and shows what happened rather than why. Klar works before launch: five buyer personas read the page and explain what's unclear, missing or unconvincing.
Side by side
| Aspect | Hotjar | Klar |
|---|---|---|
| What it tells you | What real visitors did: heatmaps, session recordings, funnels, surveys and feedback widgets. | What target buyers think: what's unclear, what's missing, and what would stop them signing up. |
| Traffic needed | Enough real visitors for the patterns to mean something. | None. Works on a live page, a staging page or an uploaded design. |
| The why | You infer it from behaviour, or ask with on-page surveys. | Each persona explains in words what they think and why. |
| Setup | A tracking script on your site, plus cookie consent where the law needs it. | Paste a URL. Nothing to install. |
| How much to trust it | Your real visitors' behaviour. | Simulated. Good for finding likely problems, not for proving what visitors do. |
| Over time | Collects data continuously as visitors arrive. | A review whenever you run one, with a score history across reviews. |
| Price | A free plan with a monthly session limit. Paid plans from about $40 a month. Hotjar is now sold as part of Contentsquare, so plans and limits are changing. | Free while in beta. No credit card required. |
Hotjar pricing checked on October 21, 2026. Prices change, so check Hotjar's pricing page for the current plans.

Klar before launch, Hotjar after. Fix what the panel flags, ship, then use heatmaps and recordings to see whether real visitors behave the way you expected.
Questions, answered.
- Is Klar a heatmap tool?
- No. Klar doesn't track visitors. Its personas read the page and say what they think, so it works without any traffic.
- Do I need to install anything for Klar?
- No. Paste a URL, or upload a design as an image or PDF.
- Is Hotjar part of Contentsquare now?
- Yes. Contentsquare bought Hotjar in 2021, and Hotjar's plans are now sold as part of Contentsquare's.
- Can I use Klar and Hotjar together?
- Yes. They answer different questions: Klar what buyers think before launch, Hotjar what visitors do after.
